What is an RID (Report ID) in DMARC?
The Report ID (RID) is a unique identifier included in DMARC aggregate reports to distinguish one report from another. Each report generated by a mailbox provider contains an RID that helps domain owners and analysts track, reference, and manage large volumes of DMARC feedback efficiently. It ensures that every report can be traced back to its origin and time period.
RIDs are particularly important for organizations receiving hundreds or thousands of reports daily. They act as a timestamped fingerprint, helping systems correlate authentication results with specific reporting entities and intervals.
When a receiving mail server sends a DMARC aggregate report, it assigns an RID that is typically a long alphanumeric string. This string may include encoded data about the report’s generation time, domain, or provider. Example:
report_id="20241023T120000Z_example.com_google.com"Each RID corresponds to a specific combination of reporting organization, domain, and reporting window (usually 24 hours). This makes it possible to verify when and from whom the data was received.
Because some large senders and receivers handle millions of messages daily, using RIDs helps maintain order and reliability in the reporting pipeline.
DMARCeye automatically extracts and organizes Report IDs from every incoming DMARC report. This allows users to trace authentication outcomes by provider, time frame, and reporting source. If inconsistencies or missing reports are detected, DMARCeye uses the RID to identify and reconcile gaps in data.
Through its advanced report management, DMARCeye provides a clear audit trail and precise analytics for authentication tracking across large or distributed email infrastructures.
