DMARC rua Tag

The DMARC rua tag specifies where aggregate reports are sent. Learn how it works and how DMARCeye transforms raw rua data into authentication insights.

What Is the DMARC rua Tag?

The DMARC rua tag defines where aggregate reports about email authentication results should be sent. These reports give domain owners visibility into which mail servers are sending messages on their behalf and whether those messages pass or fail SPF and DKIM checks.

The tag appears in a DMARC DNS record using the format:

 rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@example.com

The address listed receives daily XML-based summary reports from participating mail receivers.

How the DMARC rua Tag Works

When a receiving mail server processes messages from your domain, it records how each message performed against SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. Those results are compiled into an aggregate report, which is then sent to the address specified in your rua tag.

Organizations often use multiple addresses, separating them with commas:

 rua=mailto:dmarc@reports.example.com,mailto:security@example.org

If the reporting address belongs to a different domain, that external recipient must publish an authorization record to allow reports to be sent safely.

These aggregate reports are essential for understanding domain activity and detecting unauthorized use.

The Role of DMARC rua in Domain Monitoring

The rua tag provides actionable data that helps administrators identify legitimate senders, spot alignment failures, and detect potential spoofing attempts.

During the early stages of DMARC deployment, most organizations use a p=none policy with a configured rua tag to collect and analyze data before moving to stricter enforcement. Regular review of these reports helps ensure all mail streams are properly authenticated.

DMARC rua and DMARCeye

DMARCeye automatically collects, processes, and visualizes the aggregate reports sent to your rua address.

Instead of parsing raw XML files manually, DMARCeye turns them into clear dashboards showing authentication results by source, domain, and volume. This helps teams monitor compliance, detect anomalies, and plan safe progression toward full DMARC enforcement.

By centralizing all rua data, DMARCeye makes it easier to see how your entire email ecosystem behaves across time.
